Fantastic Opportunity to Work in a Small Community and Make an Impact
September 17, 2025by: Sandy Young - United StatesProgram: Volunteer and Teach English in Costa RicaI debated what experience to do when volunteering in Costa Rica and settled on Teaching English. I took a TEFL course, did the IVHQ prep work, and waited patiently for my volunteer dates. I volunteered for IVHQ previously in Fiji and had a fantastic experience. The Costa Rica was a very different experience as you may expect differences in a different country but also fantastic. I was partnered with a community center about 1 1/2 to 2 hours by bus outside of San Jose so ended up taking UBER, which was affordable. My class was a group of Intermediate English learners and by listening to their needs on the 1st day, changed my teaching plans from grammar to focus on speaking, reading comprehension, and vocabulary understanding. I had a great 2-weeks with the class, making an impact in a small community often overlooked, and hope to come back through another volunteer experience. The local team had great resources and support. My homestay was with an awesome family. I enjoyed the private room that had a kitchen and a place to stretch out in the mornings/evenings. I also enjoyed the Costa Rican cuisine that the matriarch of the family cooked daily.
Beautiful Belize
September 13, 2025by: Nic Ruddenklau - New ZealandProgram: Marine Conservation Volunteer Abroad Program in BelizeMy daughter choose marine conservation in Belize as her chosen program and I was lucky enough to join her. The people of Belize are friendly, helpful and very safe. As well as scuba diving to spear fish the evasive lionfish, we also had an educational element each day which was great to learn the basis behind why we were doing what we were doing and also learning more about the local underwater environment. Even though we travelled onto America afterwards, my daughters favourite moments of our overseas trip was her time on the volunteer program in Belize.
Volunteering in Bali: A Journey of Nature and Friendship
September 13, 2025by: Anna Serret - SpainProgram: Volunteer in Turtle Conservation in BaliVolunteering in Bali with the turtle conservation project was such a special experience. The local team is incredibly helpful, always happy, and eager to teach you new things. They do everything they can to make sure you have a great time while also learning and contributing. Another amazing part is meeting people from all over the world—it’s so nice to share the experience with such a diverse group of new friends.

I actually didn't start out looking for ways to either volunteer or to get abroad. It was while job searching my senior year of college when I was getting slightly depressed thinking about sitting at a desk in an office all day every day that on a whim I started looking up opportunities working with animals (my true passion). I came across a volunteer program that advertised saving baby sea turtles in Costa Rica. Having never been out of the country by myself before, but thinking it sounded like the perfect fix to my sudden onset of turning-into-an-adult-anxiety, I decided to go for it! My plan was to get it out of my system so that I could happily settle into my professional career once I got home. That completely backfired, obviously, and my trip only ignited a newfound burning need to continue to travel as much as I can!

What inspired you to travel abroad?
Sustainability is fundamentally about balance. It’s about behaving in ways that enable a diverse range of stakeholders to succeed and flourish in the long-term. There are many elements to sustainable volunteering, but some of the aspects for a volunteer to consider include how transparent an organization is in terms of how they identify the projects they support, especially in relation to projects that involve children, the extent to which volunteers will be trained and supported to work with local people in a responsible way, and the ability of an organization to demonstrate the long term impact that their projects have had on supporting genuine community or environmental needs.

It was the end of my HSC and I was bitten by the travel bug. Cambodia was a place theoretically close to my heart, but I had never been there. I empathized deeply with the extreme poverty and corruption that existed there. That is what ultimately pushed me to apply.
