Frequently Asked Questions

The most important document to teach in China is a Z visa. Other requirements generally vary from one school or institution to another. You can get the latest info from the embassy in your country.

Most employers require at least a Bachelor’s degree and TEFL certification. Other qualifications could include work experience and native English skills, depending on the school. Know the eligibility requirements before sending your application.

The monthly salary for foreign teachers in China typically ranges from $1,000 to $3000, sometimes even more. How much you get generally depends on your experience and qualifications as well as the employer and location.

There is always a need for foreign teachers in China. This is due to the year-on-year shortage of teachers (by the thousands!) all over the country, increasing consumption of English education, and a lesser number of applicants.

Unprofessional Environment with Little Value for Qualified Educators

as Pro: A teaching qualification from your home country is not required to work here, which may appeal to those looking to gain initial teaching experience abroad. as Con:The organisation operates with a high level of inconsistency and lacks professionalism. Communication from head office is often contradictory—different staff members may provide conflicting instructions, creating confusion and uncertainty. Teachers receive minimal support and are discouraged from asking questions, even when trying to ensure they are meeting expectations. The company frequently changes policies and decisions without clear communication, making it difficult to understand your role or responsibilities. Qualified and experienced teachers from their home countries are undervalued. Despite having more experience and relevant credentials, I was expected to take on heavier workloads than some colleagues who were paid more. In disputes with schools, the organisation tends to side with the school regardless of circumstances, without properly considering the teacher’s perspective. There is a complete lack of safeguarding policies or training, raising serious concerns about student and staff welfare. Advice to Management Establish and uphold consistent values and professional standards across the organisation. Ensure all head office staff are properly trained and aligned in their communication and decision-making. Recognise and value teachers who are professionally qualified from their native countries. Implement clear safeguarding policies and provide proper training to protect both students and staff. Improve internal communication and be open to questions and feedback from conscientious teachers aiming to do their job well.
